Prompt #8: Social Intelligence (Peterson)

Review the research of Peterson on Social Intelligence.

Describe two ways that you can attempt to affect growth in the students you teach that will enhance their “social intelligence.”

  1. Organizing activities where students work with other students and are able to utilize their personal experiences would enhance their social intelligence.

Also, making an effort to include every viewpoint in discussing an issue with as little bias as possible, to introduce them to something new and to give them the opportunities to form their own opinions within their experience.

  2. One way would to help students with social intelligence would be to help students with empathy. To help students with this I would have them learn about the different cultures they have in their own classroom and make sure that they understand what is going on in the world. I want them to empathize with other people from around the world. Another way to help social intelligence to grow would be to have students work in groups and have students do public speaking. This would help them to socialize in the groups. The public speaking would help them to speak with others.

  3. A better understanding of the why behind their level of social intelligence will help me as a teacher. Is there a cultural reasoning or is there something else that may be holding the student back.

The act of role playing whether it be something that the students come up with or some other format. This would give the students an opportunity to act out in ways that they would have never been able to as just being themselves.

  4. 1) First way to affect growth in social intelligence is showing social intelligence myself. Students need an example on how to behave with other people. If you show how to be courteous with them and other people, you will be showing it by example because I might be the only example they have.

2)When students are rude or say something improper, it is important to let the student know why and how to handle a certain social situation. Sometimes student's surroundings are not appropriate or open to proper social intelligence. Some act out in what they have learned.

  5. I think one way would be to do a question and answer session. On the first day of class put the students into groups of two or three and have them ask short interview questions about each other and then after they are through the group will get up in front of the class and present what they have learned about each other. This gives the students a chance to get to know each other and allows them to socialize in their groups which builds rapport. No student is singled out. Another way to help with social intelligence is to participate in small competitions as a class. Some examples could be a spelling bee or a history contest. As a project we could do a mimi jeoprady game over history or have a mock spelling bee in the classroom where each student participates and they learn together.

  6. I would have students work in pairs and learn about each others life, culture and their goals, this would allow for social emotional learning. Another way of obtaining social intelligence would be class presentations of subjects that interest them, sports, music, hobbies.
